Gateway MX6421 Sound Audio Driver
After installing hard drive Hitachi 7200rpm at Gateway mx6421 laptop, the drive speed going much faster as is proper and all works well, except the audio. The audio driver that fails during installation although the conexant driver used is specific for mx6421 laptop model from Gateway’s official site.
The first thing you can do to resolve Audio driver failure after installing new hard drive on mx6421 is find out the exist audio drivers. You can get it under Sound Video and Game Control at the Device Manager. Mostly, Gateway MX6421 laptop comes with Windows Media Center, you will fail to load the audio driver if while watching the driver details you get a message “No driver files are required or have not been loaded for this device.”
Here’s step by step tutorial to make the sound work on the MX6421 with XP Media Center:
Download Gateway driver here and extract. By default, it will keep on the Cabs folder
Run the Setup.exe in c:\cabs\D00377-002-001 folder
Go to Device Manager
Select Multimedia audio controller and click Reinstall driver
Select “no, not this time” on the wizard that comes up
Check the “install from a list…” and click Next.
Choose “don’t search…” and click Next.
Scroll down to “Sound, Video, and Game controllers” and double click on it.
Click on Conexant in the left pane
Click on “conexant ac-link audio” in the right panel and click Next.
Here you’ll get a message says “installing this driver is not recommended…” click Yes. This will ask to locate a file, if so then browse to select the c:\cabs folder. Hit OK and you will see the installation runs. Wait it until complete. After restart the machine, now the sound on the MX6421 should works fine.

I tried for days and almost a week to get the driver… even the gateway site is no help…
Only found it here and how to do it right…
