Thinkpad W500:Fixing Graphics Problem in Ubuntu 8.10
This method actually suceed fixing graphical desktop problem on Lenovo Thinkpad W500, T500 or even T400. Since Lenovo Thinkpads switch the graphics, ubuntu confuse to use the graphics card or even can’t locate the VGA card. It seems there is no PCI express display found.
Follow this step to solve the problem: Reboot your Thinkpad notebooks, go to BIOS and you have to change some settings.
Default Primary Video Device => PCI Express
Boot Display Device => ThinkPad LCD
Graphics Device => (change it) Discrete Graphics
OS Detection for Switchable Graphics => Disabled
After changing graphics device, your Thinkpad graphics card will be fixed. You may also change graphics mode to “integrated to use intel’s chipset”. Eventhough the graphic performance not quite good, but this step will keep your battery life.
Many thanks for ubuntu forums
On my T500, the last two settings are found in the BIOS under “Config” then “Display”.
My lenovo t500 has only this two items under config->graphics on bios
Default Primary Video Device => PCI Express
Boot Display Device => ThinkPad LCD
and missing this two
Graphics Device => (change it) Discrete Graphics
OS Detection for Switchable Graphics => Disabled
I updated bios to latest version and searched again all over bios but did not found “Graphics device”. any idea?
