I am trying to install XP on my Lenovo y510. However, after running through the initial setup screens from the Windows XP CD, I get the error message that Windows (XP) cannot locate a hard disk on my laptop, and therefore the setup/installation is aborted. What is the workaround to get XP to recognize the HDD and install?
Thank you!

Hey David:
This is a pretty typical issue on different models and brands of laptops. Usually you have to make a boot disk and so forth to get it to work. I see this was Sept. 4, so you probably already figured it out.
BUT for the next person:
Start up your computer, Hit F2 to go into the BIOS.
Under the drive settings, change the SATA setting to compatibility.
Reboot and start the install again, it should work great.
Good luck everyone!!!

I’ve downloaded the touchpad driver (synaptic) from lenovo’s support website and other sources as well. But when i move on to next step after license agreement, there’s an error message saying that “The system cannot find the path specified”. This applied to all the touch pad driver i’ve downloaded from the internet. Do you know where can i get right? Or is it something wrong with my Y510?

After you switch to compatibility mode to install and have installed all the drivers how do you go back to AHCI? When I try it instantly reboots after getting maybe half way through “loading windows”

Bismarck, leave it in ‘compatibility’ mode – I have just installed XP onto my Y510 and it is running really well in ‘compatibility’ mode.
I have another slight problem with the ACPI drivers but that is another story…

Horseman: That’s what I’ve done for now but the performance is subpar in my opinion. I know on other systems I’ve put them into compatibility mode installed the proper storage drivers and then could flip back to AHCI. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to work in this case.
