Inspiron 1420: Sound Issue on Windows 7
Dell Inspiron 1420 getting sound issues while running Windows 7 is another problem that often comes. Someone who experience said he’s facing several problems with the speakers and sound since installing Windows 7 x64 on Inspiron 1420. He gets the sound problem whether using the SigmaTel audio drivers or using Windows Audio drivers.

Download the latest audio driver for Inspiron 1420 and running it.
By default the driver installer will extract to C:\dell\drivers\R16something\ .
Go to Device Manager
Go to the “Sound, Video, and Game Controllers”
Select the generic device that should be name something like “High
Definition Audio Device” and right click on it.
Go to “update driver software”
Select “Browse my Computer for driver software”
Click on “Browse”, and select the previously mentioned path.
Click “Next”,
Now you should see the installation would be progress, wait it running completely. If then the Inspiron 1420 system request a reboot just hit OK to agree. After the machine is back on you should have the sound works properly now.
