Ignore the comment below mine. This little ‘fix’ does indeed add sound back to Windows XP, make sure you download the file containing both the Microsoft UAA Driver and the RealTek sound driver, it’s file size is 31.21MB and version number is 1.87 that’s the file your looking for.

After days and days of investigation I was finally able to make it work!
-uninstall any audio drivers (also kb888111 if you installed it)
-In the “Device Manager” uninstall/remove a “PCI device” marked as unknown (i.e. with a “!”)
-restart
-install kb888111xpsp2.exe (for Microsoft UAA Bus driver)
-restart
-install your audio drivers

Some more precision:
After having removed the unknown PCI device and restarted the computer,
windows will ask you to install automatically the drivers for Microsoft UAA Bus.
Cancel it and install the right kb888111*.exe suited for your OS.
Then reboot and windows will once more ask you to install automatically the drivers for Microsoft UAA Bus.
This time you can let it go. Here you are! I hope this helps!

I had exactly the same problem with my new motherboard that I just bought 1 week ago. I tried to reinstall my drivers so many times with the latest drivers (R1.94).
I have a Gigabyte EP35-DS3 and XP sp2 couldn’t find the integrated sound card of the motherboard. I followed the same procedure as you described ans IT WORKS !!
I just had to download the right update for my audio chipset ALC 889A (kb835221.exe) that you can find on gigabyte’s website : http://www.gigabyte.de/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2675
and the install the latest driver :
